Every layout uses back-wall attachment. Corner brackets also attach to the side wall.

Installation overview

Middle bracket first. Then six rods. Then the outer brackets.

  1. Choose your layout.

Pick the layout and bracket positions. Use wood studs where possible; otherwise use suitable anchors with the screws.

  2. Mark and level.

Mark the bottom of each bracket at the same height, measured from the floor or from the top of the bracket below. Check the marks are level. The bracket is your template; set a mini-level on top of it.

  3. Attach the middle bracket.

Attach it at your marks, firmly enough to hold the rods, without final tightening. It is the first bracket for every layout.

  4. Slide in the rods.

Slide all six rods straight through the middle bracket and let them hang, roughly centered.

  5. Attach the outer brackets.

Attach both outer brackets at your marks, without final tightening. With a wall or another shelf at both ends, slide the rods to one side to make room for each. Side walls under 44 inches apart: assemble the whole shelf first, then lift it into place.

  6. Extend, level, tighten.

Extend the rods into both outer brackets so they are securely seated; all the way through is best. Check level and that every rod is straight, then fully tighten without overtightening. Recheck before loading.

This is a short overview, not the full installation guide. Follow the installation guide included with your kit for screw-hole positions and your wall type.

Will it fit my space?

One kit makes one shelf that adjusts from 42 to 74 inches in half-inch steps, with no cutting. On a back wall, the shelf can be shorter than the wall. Side wall to side wall, the walls must be 42–74 inches apart. Each bracket is 10 inches tall and sticks out 12 inches from the wall.

Fit & planning checklist
Do I need different brackets for each layout?

No. All three brackets are the same. Where a bracket sits decides which screw holes you use: six rear holes on the back wall, or three rear holes plus two recessed side-wall holes at a corner.

What tools do I need?

The kit includes 3 brackets, 6 rods, 20 screws, 20 anchors, 1 marker and 3 mini-levels. You’ll also need a drill, a drill bit that suits your wall and the anchors, a screwdriver or driver bit, and a tape measure. A stud finder helps you locate wood studs.

How are the parts packed?

Six rods arrive in one sleeve. Three mini-levels arrive in one bag. One outer hardware bag contains separate packs of 20 screws and 20 anchors.

Can I put kits together for a longer shelf?

Yes, end to end. Install two shelves in a line so their brackets sit side by side where they meet. Each shelf keeps its own three brackets, so two kits cover 84–148 inches. This works in all three layouts, and each shelf keeps its own 200 lb rating.

What about shipping and returns?

Kits qualify for free standard shipping. In-stock orders ship within one business day. Returns are available within 30 days under the return policy; customers pay return shipping.

How much room does it need?

Each bracket is 10 inches tall, 2 inches thick and sticks out 12 inches from the wall, so plan for about 12 inches of depth. Check that doors, trim and walkways have room. When stacking shelves, measure from the top of the bracket below.

My side walls are close together. Will it still work?

Yes, if they are 42–74 inches apart. Measure at shelf height, near the back wall and near the front, and use the smallest number. At 44 inches or more, install it the usual way: middle bracket first, all six rods through it, then the two outer brackets, sliding the rods to one side to make room for each. Under 44 inches there isn’t room to fit the outer brackets, so assemble the whole shelf first and lift it into place.

How much weight can it hold?

200 lb per shelf, evenly distributed, in all three layouts, installed into wood studs or with drywall anchors. That includes clothes hung from the rods. Install it as shown in the instructions.

Meet the founder

A small business, built around what people asked for.

“I listened to customers for a year, then designed a simpler shelving solution around their needs.”

Hi, I’m Josh. Before XpandiShelf existed, I spent a year listening to people talk about the shelving in their closets, pantries and laundry rooms. They wanted a shelf that fits the space they actually have, a simple install, and no cutting.

So that’s what we built: one kit that adjusts from 42 to 74 inches, three ways to mount it with the same three brackets, and a bracket that doubles as your drilling template.

XpandiShelf brackets are molded in the USA. Questions about your space? Email us at info@xpandishelf.com.
